The West Region is a major employment centre, providing a wide range of jobs for residents in the region and beyond. Business clusters that offer ample job opportunities near homes include the industrial estates in Tuas, Boon Lay, Pioneer, Jurong East, Jurong West, Bukit Batok and Western Islands, and commercial nodes such as Jurong Gateway and the International Business Park.
The 360ha Jurong Lake District is set to become the largest commercial and regional centre outside Singapore's city centre. As a smart, well-connected and sustainable mixed-use district, it will house more than 500,000m2 of office space, 250,000m2 of retail space, 1,000 homes and 2,800 hotel rooms when fully developed.
A smart connected and sustainable Jurong Lake District
With a number of recently completed developments and others currently under construction, Jurong Gateway is set to become the commercial heart of the West Region. JCube and JEM, two recently-opened malls, offer plenty of retail, food and beverage, and entertainment choices to residents, workers and visitors to the district. The recently set-up Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability helps working adults upgrade their skills to stay relevant and competitive in our dynamic economy. Upcoming projects like the Westgate office-and-retail development, the Big Box warehouse-retail development, a 570-room hotel along Jurong Town Hall Road, an office building at Venture Avenue and the J Gateway condominium are all expected to be completed in the next few years.
Over the next 10-15 years, more land will be set aside in Wenya, Jurong West, Pioneer and Tuas to support the continued growth of the industrial and port sectors.
CleanTech Park, developed by JTC Corporation, is Singapore's first eco-business park for visionary corporations that have embraced environmental sustainability. Located next to the Nanyang Technological University, the congregation of R&D institutions promotes the exchange of ideas and knowledge, and serves as a test-bedding site for early adoption of sustainability technologies and solutions. The 50ha Business Park is being developed in phases. CleanTech One, the Park's first completed building, has welcomed cutting edge tenants since early 2012. CleanTech Two, the second development in the eco-business park, is currently under construction and slated to be ready in 2014.
A range of jobs closer to home will be provided when the Wenya area is progressively opened up for industrial businesses, including a new data centre currently under construction. The Tanjong Kling area at Jalan Buroh will also be rejuvenated to provide a better quality environment that caters to industrial uses such as logistics and warehousing, precision engineering and general manufacturing.
Over the next 20 years, the Tukang area will be transformed into the Tukang Innovation Park, a key hub for knowledge-centric and innovation activities.
To increase our limited land and space supply, underground spaces and floating structures will be explored for a variety of uses, such as storage of oil products and petrochemicals. In a similar vein, JTC will optimise land use with new concepts such as Cluster Industrial Complex with Megahoist, the Plug-and-Play Factory and Small Footprint Standard Factories.
Small footprint factory uses less land than a typical standard factory. It incorporates many structural provisions so that occupants can make use of different material handling systems to move their goods and machinery into, within, and out of the development fuss-free.
